COMPARISON OF MOVEMENTS, LITERARY PERIODS, AND THE TENDENCY OF FOREIGNIZATION IN THE NOVEL THE RED BICYCLE: YAHWARI #1 BY KIM DONG HWA AND THE NOVEL DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THIRD WHEELING BY JEFF KINNEY

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the comparison of literary movements, generations, and foreignization tendencies in two graphic novels, Sepeda Merah Yahwari #1 by Kim Dong Hwa and Diary Si Bocah Tengil: Orang Ketiga by Jeff Kinney. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative literature approach. The data consist of selected excerpts from both works, analyzed based on literary movements, generational context, and aesthetic and linguistic tendencies.

The findings reveal that although both works belong to the same medium, they demonstrate significant differences. Sepeda Merah Yahwari #1 reflects humanistic realism with poetic and reflective language, rooted in Korean local traditions. In contrast, Diary Si Bocah Tengil represents contemporary Western popular literature, characterized by humor, informality, and a focus on adolescent experiences. Furthermore, differences in translation strategies are identified, particularly in the retention of source-language elements in Jeff Kinney’s work, indicating a tendency toward foreignization as proposed by Lawrence Venuti.

This study contributes to comparative literature by highlighting cross-cultural aesthetic and narrative differences in graphic novels.
